Planning and Preparation
1a. Knowledge of content curriculum and process. Library media specialist displays extensive knowledge of the curriculum resources, various literacies, and the research process, and is able to develop meaningful connections.
1b. Knowledge of students. Library media specialist demonstrates thorough knowledge of the students' developmental levels, basic skills, backgrounds and interests, as well as abilities and special needs. Library media specialist employs intentional strategies to use this knowledge expertly in planning for instruction, promoting reading, and developing the collection.
1c. Establishes goal for the library program and supports the school program. Library media specialist displays an extensive understanding of the instructional goals for all of the disciplines and diverse student population including student achievement data and expertly provides the necessary resources, technology and instructional services to support these goals.
1d. Knowledge of resources. Library media specialist has an extensive knowledge of the resources within the school's library collection; has knowledge of and the skills to access resources available electronically, accompanied with advanced skills for accessing information using these resources; and actively seeks other resources throughout the district and from agencies, organizations, and institutions within the community at large and beyond.
1e. Knowledge of literature and lifelong learning. Library media specialist has an extensive knowledge of population appropriate literature of all genres and is extremely successful in working with groups and individuals to promote reading for pleasure and knowledge.
1f. Plans to evaluate the program. Library media specialist's evaluation plan is ongoing throughout the year and demonstrates evidence of a clear path toward improving the library media program on an ongoing basis. Data from automated systems is used for planning purposes. Surveys of teachers and students and needs assessments are conducted to collect data.
1g. Integrating the program into the school program. Library media specialist's program plans are highly coherent, taking into account the competing demands of scheduled time in the library, consultative work with teachers, and work in maintaining and extending the collections; the plan has been developed with input from teachers.
